Life Lesson #6: Adapt

Life Lesson #6: Adapt.

When we were in Mexico early this year I got to meet a few of the Mayan people as well as their dogs. It was a small community of Mayans who were still living much like their ancestors did. It was a great experience, and one of the lessons I took away, though was not one that we were intentionally taught, was that no matter where dogs live they will adapt! These dogs were not living in the lap of luxury, caring for their canine companions wasn't top priority for expenses on the Mayan's list, much like many of the dogs on the reservations back home in Fort St. James. The difference between these dogs as far as temperament and looks? The Mayan's dogs had short dense coats to keep them cool and free of dirt and parasites (well, mostly!) and the "Rez Dogs" back home have much thicker or longer coats, usually a double coat, to combat the harsh winters in Canada. Otherwise, the colouring was much the same and their temperaments were mostly the same (though I did find that the Mayan's dogs were more open to attention from strangers than the Rez Dogs back home).
